September 1st, 1980 - The Day Fandom Was Born.
More so than not, conventions as we know them did not exist in 1980. The concept of a convention by the fans, and for the fans, was an unheard of concept. Conventions existed for the sole purpose of promoting the big names of whatever industry the convention was centered around. It was nothing but publicity for those that were all ready a success. Such was Noreascon, or the 38th World Science Fiction Convention. Among the awards given out at that convention were Best Novel for Arthur C Clark, and Best Short Story for George R.R. Martin. People clapped and cheered for these all ready established and successful names, at the same time, in some forgotten corner of the convention, was an unknown man who was about to drop an atomic bomb's worth of social and artistic revolution.
